Hi, I'm Alan, the person behind FYRTEK.
I'm a London-based writer, photographer and lifelong technology enthusiast with a tendency to fall very deeply into the things that interest me.
At the moment, that means an alarming number of mechanical keyboards, far too many switches, a camera usually somewhere nearby, and a soundtrack that tends to involve heavily distorted guitars.
What is FYRTEK?
FYRTEK brings together two sides of my world.
FYR is the music side. Metal, blackgaze, heavygaze, shoegaze, post-rock and the records that stay with me long after I've stopped listening.
TEK is where I explore technology, with a particular obsession with mechanical keyboards, switches, keycaps and custom builds, alongside computing, desk gear, gadgets and useful everyday tech.
But FYRTEK isn't intended to be another website filled with specification sheets and buying guides.
I prefer writing about experiences.
Why did I buy something? What surprised me? Did my opinion change after living with it? What did I learn? Would I still buy it today?
My mechanical keyboard posts in particular document my journey through the hobby as it happens. I'm learning, experimenting, changing my mind and occasionally buying something I absolutely did not need.
The journey is the endgame.
A little more about me
Technology has fascinated me for as long as I can remember, but photography and music have been equally important parts of my life.
I'm also passionate about accessibility and autism awareness, drawing partly from my experience as a parent. I believe the communities we build around our interests should be welcoming places where people can learn, share things they love and feel comfortable being themselves.
FYRTEK is ultimately my corner of the internet for doing exactly that.
No corporate voice. No pretending I know everything. No review score engineered down to a decimal point.
Just things I find interesting, photographed, tested, listened to, thought about and written from my own perspective.
Thanks for stopping by.
